Toby Fox

Creator of Undertale & Deltarune                 Writer/Composer/Director/Designer/Programmer

Toby Fox has had a significant impact on the world of gaming. He created a new dialog surrounding how players interact with games and popularized metatextual storytelling.

Fox was inspired by other games such as Yume Nikki, The Mother Series (AKA: Earthbound), and a plethora of mods for RPGs. One of his first projects he worked on was for Earthbound creatively named "The Halloween Hack" which boosted his visibility on various forums.

Fox is a more reserved person on the internet due to the popularity Undertale. A good amount of the praise Undertale gained was from the way it portrays different identities. There are underlying transgender themes with one of the characters and multiple types of relationships such as straight, gay, and lesbian couples.

Of course, no game is perfect on release however they can update to match the criticisms players may have. The Nintendo Switch version had many different changes aside from a Japanese localization. Characters were explored more and as a result some of the representation only became stronger. In the switch port there isn't just one instance of trans representation but two where the second one was very open about the trans experience.

In general, the way Undertale portrays violence is very interesting. A video essayist called "Left on Replay" made a video speaking about the message of Undertale and how violence is used against and for the liberation of the oppressed group. Toby Fox's work on this indie darling is a good way to spread that sort of message, granted the game isn't misconstrued.
